Some of his famous books are:

  • Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers
  • Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable
  • This is Marketing
  • All Marketers Are Liars
  • The Dip

Seth Godin added much to Marketing and taught millions of people about how Modern Marketing should be. He started talking about inbound marketing before others. Godin gives importance to customers and believes that great marketers don’t use consumers to solve their company’s problem, they instead use marketing to solve other people’s problems.

We will try to present briefly some of Seth Godin’s thoughts on marketing, to appreciate all that he added to our evolving field.

1- Permission Marketing:

Seth Godin introduced Permission Marketing in his book of that title that he wrote in 1999. He believes that the Marketing activities need to be based on gaining people’s permission before starting to market to them. You need to sell to people who want to hear from you because it’s more effective than Outbound Marketing. And to be heard, you need to earn trust, by providing something “anticipated, personal, and relevant”. Godin identified 5 Levels of Permission that you can find in his book.

Godin: “Permission marketing works better than spam”

2- “Content marketing is the only marketing left”

A decade ago, Seth Godin said that “Content marketing is the only marketing left”. It’s a quote that shows the importance and impact of Content in Marketing. It has the ability to create brand awareness, building trust and credibility, because people appreciate value and quality content. Content marketing is the fuel of your social media marketing and supports your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts.

3- Be remarkable, Be A Purple Cow

One of Seth’s most famous ideas is the purple cow.

The idea of the “purple cow” is that the marketers need to create something remarkable. You need to create something that stands out from competitors. He gave the example of when you are on the road and you see a cow, you will keep driving because you’ve seen cows before, and they became boring, but if the cow was purple, it will be special and attract attention.

4- Everyone is not your customer.

Seth believes that trying to please everyone, and it’s the key to failure. When you speak to everyone, you speak to no one. You need to listen to your real customers, which brings us to Buyer Personas.

5- “Marketing is no longer about the stuff you make, but about the stories, you tell.”

Instead of just talking about your products’ or services’ features, focus on creating a story that will touch people and their emotions.
